Why are gummy bears shaped like bears?

 

The first gummy candy created by Riegel was shaped like bears. This was influenced by the trained bears Riegel had seen at festivals when he was growing up. The main ingredient used was gum arabic, which is where the name gummy bears originated. Gummy bears get their long shelf life and chewy texture from edible gelatin.
